Today, he is a man. [Jun. 23rd, 2008|03:26 am]
[Tags|, , ]

I just spent the better part of an hour stomping up and down the driveway, ranting at no one, and occasionally beating on a random piece of fence.

I am, as they say, a new man. Between Antioch's reunion (NONSTOP ANTIOCH!) and the Team seminar, my vision of myself has been transformed. I can finally call myself a MAN with a straight face. I did things this weekend that even a year ago would have been inconceivable. I got up and spoke in front of people with no more self-consciousness than I have when I'm dancing. I had somebody this weekend tell me I seemed like a PEOPLE PERSON. Me! It was hard to believe.

I have too much to do right now to go into all the details, but long story short, today has been an absolute roller coaster ride, from feeling as confident and capable as I've ever felt, to having the lowest low I've had in over six months, to dragging myself (literally) kicking and screaming out of it because nobody but NOBODY was gonna take away the vision I had this weekend of me, my school, and the world.

For the first time in my life, I feel secure enough in who I am and where I'm going that I can shake off other people's opinions, real or perceived, and keep right on going. It wasn't *easy*, mind you, but I did it. I know I can do it again if I have to.

Boston Legal [Apr. 5th, 2008|01:58 pm]
[Tags|]

You know, I had started to worry that I'd lost the ability to be really fannish. It seemed like, since Buffy, nothing inspired me. I could watch stuff and enjoy it, but it didn't *move* me. Even Firefly, which I love with all my heart, never compelled me to read or write fic or anything of that nature.

But, no, I wasn't broken. I just hadn't found the right show. Boston Legal, now... it moves me. It makes me squee. I have the biggest fancrush I've had since Giles on Alan Shore. The slash is *barely* subtext. I about died of the cute when Alan and Denny held hands in the ep I watched yesterday. Plus it tangles with some truly serious issues, and nearly always handles them in a way that I can get behind. When the characters do something slimy, they at least acknowledge it, or have to deal with consequences.

So, yay, good show! I just have to be careful not to let it take over...

*RAGE* [Mar. 27th, 2008|06:48 pm]
[Tags|, , ]

I knew Fox News was biased, but I didn't understand how bad it was until I read their take on Thomas Beatie's pregnancy. It's spiteful, intolerant, and hate-mongering, not only questioning the pregnancy (which I would be willing to let slide, as those who haven't encountered trans people before might be confused on the concept), but negating his identity as a man by consistently refering to him as a woman and using female pronouns, despite even the fact that he has legally changed his gender.

They offer a link for more information to this article, which is more respectful, but at the end links to malepregnancy.com as an example of "another pregnant male", a website which was long since declared a hoax. Had they actually done their research, though, they might have discovered that there have been other pregnant transmen, like Matt Rice.

It just... gah. The Fox article makes me sick. Compare it to Beatie's own words in the The Advocate, or TimesOnline's article, which specifically checked whether the Advocate had confirmed Beatie's pregnancy with his doctor. I suppose there's a slim chance that Beatie *and* the Advocate are lying, but really... *rolls eyes*

AATA: 1, LJ: 0 [Mar. 21st, 2008|12:34 pm]

LJ's management could learn an important lesson from the Ann Arbor Transit Authority. I got on the bus this morning and there were a whole bunch of doorknob-hanger style flyers attached to all the handholds and railings, with the words "PROPOSED SERVICE CHANGES! WE NEED YOUR INPUT!" (or words to that effect) posted in big font on the outside. Inside, they described a bunch of route changes and stuff, and specifically said "None of these changes will be implemented until we've received and considered input from the public" (again, words to that effect).

Fic: untitled post-Becoming snippet, G/E, PG-13 [Mar. 19th, 2008|03:28 pm]

[music |the guy with the harmonica and washboard on the Diag]

Seems like a good time for an inaugral fic post. I've been putting off posting this for a few weeks now, for reasons not entirely understood even by myself.

Authors: [info]the_obscure and [info]psychoadept
Pairing: Giles/Ethan
Rating: PG-13
Length: 1300 words

Note: this is a snippet of a longer G/E fic that Adam and I have been working on, in which Ethan is having nightmares about being tortured by a vampire, and comes to visit Giles to find out why. I'm not sure if we're going to work on it any more or not. Neither of us was completely satisfied with the results, but this scene came out well enough that I thought we could share it.
